Refresh the Varnish Cache to See Changes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Changes made to websites on RohanCP can take up to 15 minutes to show up on a refresh of the browser page. The reason is Varnish caching the page.

The Varnish web accelerator sets an internal time to live (TTL), caching a web page for 15 minutes after it has been accessed. After the TTL expires, Varnish checks to see if the web page has changed, updating the cache if it has. In addition browsers may also cache images, javascript, style sheets, etc. from the page.

Refresh the cache (for your browser and Varnish) immediately by performing a force-refresh with your browser.

  • For Windows:
    - Firefox, press the SHIFT and F5 keys at the same time, or hold down the SHIFT key and click the reload icon.
    - Chrome or Internet Explorer, press the CTRL and F5 keyes at the same time.
  • For MacOS:
    - Chrome and Firefox, press and hold the Ctrl and Shift keys and then press R
    - Safari, hold down the Cmd key and click the reload button.

Alternatively, while on campus or using the campus Palo Alto VPN, you can use port 88 to view the website "behind the cache" and see updates instantly.  For example, pretend your website URL is brazil.sdsu.edu.  To view port 88, retype the URL as brazil.sdsu.edu:88/
