Open Educational Resource (OER) Week at SDSU is here!

The SDSU Library and campus is celebrating OER Week March 20th-24th in recognition of International Open Education Week, sponsored by the Open Education Consortium, which strives to generate awareness about the benefits of OERs.

Have you heard about Open Educational Resources, or OERs? The Open Education movement centers around the creation and dissemination of free educational resources that can be easily accessed and modified by users anywhere in the world. The Open Education Consortium is comprised of hundreds universities, schools, colleges, and other organizations from across the globe that share a common goal of making education more open, free, and accessible to anyone.

In the spirit of OER Week, did you know that SDSU already:

  • Puts popular 100-level textbooks on reserve at the library? For more information, check out the library’s website, and see if your course textbook is on reserve!

  • Provides you the ability to request materials from other libraries all over the world if SDSU doesn’t have it? (Worldcat)

  • Maintains an online syllabus collection? Want to know which books a professor requires for a certain course before registering? Check out the syllabus collection online to see if a syllabus from past semesters is available.

  • Pilots an immediate access program where students are given access to an electronic version of their course materials as soon as they register for a specific class? If the student decides to drop the class, they can opt out and pay nothing for the materials. Should they decide to stay in the class, the materials can be purchased at a reduced cost--usually between 25-60% less than bookstore prices! For more information, visit the bookstore’s website.

  • Provides textbook rentals through the bookstore? Textbooks can be rented at a reduced cost and returned at the end of the semester. For more information, visit the bookstore’s website.

  • Provides price matching through the campus bookstore? Simply provide proof that the book you need for class is available at a lower price somewhere else and the bookstore will match the lowest price and beat it by 5%! For more information, visit the bookstore’s website.
