Description
Longenecker served as Professor of Art, teaching art classes and supervising student art teachers from 1955 until her retirement in 1990. During her 35 years at SDSU, she traveled to Japan, Korea, the Middle East, and parts of Europe, gaining experiences which enriched her contributions to transcultural artistic understanding. Professor Longenecker was instrumental in attracting various artists and speakers to SDSU, including famed Japanese artists Shōji Hamada and Tatsuzō Shimaoka, and Jiddu Krishnamurti, renowned Indian philosopher and spiritual teacher. In 1978, Longenecker founded the Mingei International Museum, located in San Diego's Balboa Park. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from SDSU in 2007, and was inducted into the San Diego Women's Hall of Fame in 2011. She passed away in 2013 at the age of 93. In her oral history, Longenecker recounts her childhood and development as an artist, as well as stories of relationships with early friends and mentors, who later became significant influences. She also discusses how she built a popular ceramics program at SDSU, to teach and supervise art student-teachers, and how she was afforded many opportunities to travel, most notably to Japan. Her stories include amazing connections with people. This oral history was made possible by a grant from the John and Jane Adams Endowment for the Humanities and is part of the University Archives Multimedia Files Collection. Names mentioned during the interview include: Betsy Ross, Elizabeth Love Audigier, Robert Carr, Judy Munk, Jack Lenor Larsen, Walter Munk, Millard Sheets, Laura Andresen, Archie Wiedemeyer, Bernard Leach, Yanagi Sōetsu, Francis Eric Bloy, George Sorenson, Allan Anderson, Beatrice Wood, Mary Zimbalist, Frances Lloyd Wright, Bob Wallace, Ginger Wallace, Margaret Cargill, and Roger Revelle.
