Positions Availability

Please note that you will be applying to a pool of positions. The library has various units throughout and those areas are subject to different skill requirements, schedules, and staffing needs.

Type of Positions & Duties

Most library student employment positions are public-facing and deal with staffing our help desks. For these positions, prior customer service experience is a benefit. These positions typically fall in the library units of 24/7 Study Area, Administrative Office, build IT makerspace, Circulation, Computing Hub, Digital Humanities Center, Research Instruction & Outreach, Special Collections & University Archives.

Throughout the library units, there are other student employment positions that are back-of-the-house and handle more of the technical tasks. For these positions, thorough detail-oriented skills are a benefit. These positions typically fall in the library units of Administrative Office, Collections & Resource Sharing, Content Organization & Management, Stack Maintenance.

When does hiring happen?

The majority of student hiring happens at the beginning of each semester. We encourage students to look for the application a month or so before each new semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) and apply for each semester, you are seeking employment. Occasionally, the library will hire students during the semester.

When will I hear back?

The Library cannot provide information on vacancies as each unit manages their own student personnel. Due to the volume of applicants, you will not be contacted unless you are selected for an interview. Please do not contact the Library to inquire on the status of your application as hiring is done individually by units that have open positions.

Submissions will be reviewed against current openings and only candidates who are selected for interviews will be contacted by a unit supervisor. In the event that you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted at the SDSU email that you provide in the application below. Your application will be on file for one semester; please edit your application if you have any changes in your schedule or availability.

Eligibility requirements

  • Enrollment at SDSU for a minimum of 6 undergraduate units or 5 graduate units. 799A/B with a letter may meet the graduate requirement. Enrollment through SDSU Global Campus does not meet these requirements.
  • Student employees must be available to work on campus.
  • DACA students and International students with J-1 or F-1 Visas are eligible as long as the above requirements are met.
