Randyn Miller

The University Library joined HathiTrust in 2021 to expand the resources available to support learning, teaching, and scholarship at San Diego State University. HathiTrust members include more than 250 libraries from around the world, and its digital library collection includes more than 19 million resources. HathiTrust's mission is to preserve the published record for durable, long-term, lawful access and to steward its collection in partnership with member institutions.

Essential to this partnership is a robust model for member governance, including a Board of Directors, Steering Committee, and constituent committees, working groups, and task forces. We are pleased to announce that Randyn Miller, Associate Dean for Collections, Discovery, and Digital Initiatives, has been appointed to the HathiTrust Collection Advisory Committee and will serve a three-year term on this committee of fellow collection development leaders. The committee is charged with advising HathiTrust leadership in collection management and strategic growth.

The invitation noted, “We think your experience in shared print, collections, strategy, and services will be helpful in providing guidance to HathiTrust in advancing our collection strategy.”

Miller joined the leadership team at SDSU in 2024. He is an academic library collection strategist and change management practitioner with experience strategically developing collections through sustainability and equity lenses. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous communities, he is dedicated to advancing marginalized voices and decolonizing academic librarianship. Regarding his appointment to the committee, Miller said: “I am grateful for the opportunity to engage in the important work of HathiTrust, strategically preserving our shared scholarship through this international advisory committee.”

As a member of the Collection Advisory Committee, Miller will help HathiTrust to sustain and expand its services, including:

  • HathiTrust Digital Library
  • Accessible Text Request Service
  • Copyright Review Program
  • Emergency Temporary Access Service
  • Shared Print Program
  • U.S. Federal Documents Program

“As a strategic leader for collections and digital initiatives both for San Diego State University and the California State University,” Library Dean Scott Walter said, “Randyn Miller is in a perfect position to contribute to the critical work that HathiTrust does around the world as a ‘catalyst for emerging forms of research, teaching, and learning that engage the scholarly and cultural record’ while also bringing what he learns from his HathiTrust colleagues back to strategic and operational plans for the future of our own collections.”

Associate Dean Miller will also represent the University Library at this year’s Charleston Conference, where he will present as part of the sessions: Data, Dollars, and Decisions: Harnessing AI to Analyze Collection Data & Demonstrate ROI”; and 'What’s Love Got to Do with It?': Navigating the Emotional Landscape of Data-Driven Collection Development."
