Promoting Discovery of SDSU Research through the Library
As an R1 university, San Diego State is one of the most research-intensive institutions of higher education in the United States, with students, staff, and faculty regularly engaged both in the discovery of new knowledge and in the application of that knowledge to advance the frontiers of scholarship across disciplines and improve our classrooms and communities. Working alongside colleagues in Academic Affairs and the Division of Research and Innovation, the University Library is constantly exploring new ways to provide research support services to the SDSU community, including helping to promote discovery and access to the products of research conducted at the university.
Leveraging the power of the ORCID identity management system, the library is piloting a new tool designed to visualize the scholarly output of academic departments and colleges at SDSU and more effectively document the scholarly activities of SDSU community members. Following a pilot test of this new service focusing on the work of library faculty and staff, the tool is now being used by the Department of Physics with other departments and colleges in early stages of review for inclusion.
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is “a free, unique, persistent identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities.” Applying your ORCID to publications, presentations, performances, or grants allows you not only to clearly identify your scholarly and creative contributions to your field, but to promote greater awareness of the impact of research and creative activities going on across SDSU.
John Crocket, Associate Vice President, Research Advancement, said, "Because ORCID becomes a living manifestation of your scholarship, it's a great way to add to the impact and power of SDSU's work to disseminate findings, find collaborators, and document your contributions as an SDSU community member. It's also becoming more common for federal agencies to request it as part of grant application biosketches, so now is a great time to claim and update your ORCID."
