The University Library is proud to recognize its faculty who have recently been awarded tenure and/or a promotion in academic rank. University Library Dean Scott Walter notes that “success in the tenure and promotion process represents one of the most significant achievements in a faculty member’s career, one that recognizes sustained excellence in librarianship, scholarship, and service to the library, university, CSU, and broader communities.” With this in mind, we have invited library faculty who recently earned tenure and/or promotion to reflect on works that held meaning for them as part of their academic journey.

Laurel Bliss, Fine Arts Librarian, joined the University Library in 2007 and has been promoted to the rank of (Full) Librarian. For her reflection, Laurel selected this image of “Thumper,” a feral cat then living on the SDSU campus. Laurel completed a sabbatical project documenting these “Aztec Cats,” an effort that required her to learn new skills related to digital collection development and to collaborate with colleagues to document a beloved feature of campus life. Pursuing the Aztec Cats project, she wrote, helped her “to stay engaged with learning and librarianship.”

Lucy Campbell, Electronic and Continuing Resources Librarian, came to the library in 2023 and was promoted to Associate Librarian. She selected Cooper & Rieger (2021), "What's the Big Deal?: How Researchers are Navigating Changes to Journal Access" (Ithaka S+R). This report reinforced that researchers value seamless, immediate access to scholarly content. It affirmed my philosophy that librarians should reduce barriers to discovery, inspiring projects such as LibKey implementation, SSO authentication, and updating SDSU Library's A-Z Database List that simplify access while supporting research, teaching, and information literacy.

Margaret Henderson, Health Sciences and Research Data Services Librarian, and Head of Research, Instruction, and Outreach Services, joined the University Library in 2017 and has been promoted to the rank of (Full) Librarian. For her reflection, Margaret selected Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants (2013), a book that she says “beautifully weaves Indigenous wisdom and scientific knowledge to reveal nature as a sacred gift, not a resource.”

Sarah Tribelhorn, Sciences and Sustainability Librarian, joined the University Library in 2022 and has been tenured and promoted to the rank of Associate Librarian. For her reflection, Sarah selected The Lorax (1971), a classic of children’s literature by San Diego’s own Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Sarah writes that Geisel’s “call to action inspires my work leading library sustainability initiatives, teaching climate literacy, and advancing environmental research. It reminds me that meaningful change begins with caring deeply and advocating for our planet.”

In addition to these colleagues, we congratulate other library faculty members who earned tenure and/or a promotion in rank this year, including: Kate Holvoet (Full Librarian), Rebecca Nowicki (Full Librarian), and Ashley Wilson (Associate Librarian).
