Weeks of Welcome @ Your Library

A student asking questions at the Welcome to the Library table

Along with our colleagues in Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, and Associated Students, the University Library is actively engaged all week in welcoming new students and faculty to SDSU and helping them to have a great start to their time on the Mesa.

During the week of August 24 – 28, library faculty and staff are set up “under the tent” in the Library Dome answering questions about the library and campus, helping students to find their classrooms and other resources, and introducing folks to the resources and opportunities available to them in the University Library. With an average of more than 100 people coming to the tent with a question during every hour it is staffed, some of our most popular “help” topics include:

  • Campus orientation – new students need to find their classrooms, whether those classrooms are in the library or in another campus building, but we have also helped people to locate banks, dining halls, financial aid, and more
  • IT help – among our most popular questions during the first week have to do with identity management, access to Canvas courses or the MySDSU portal, and how to log into library computers or other SDSU systems, and for that we refer folks to our colleagues in the Library Computing Hub located in the Love Library
  •  Student success resources – it may only be the first week of classes, but SDSU students are keen to find the resources and services that will help them to be successful in the classroom, and so we are happy to point them to our colleagues in the resource and tutoring centers located in the library, including the Writing Center, Math and Science Learning Center, Latinx Resource Center, and International Student Center
  • Working on campus – the University Library is one of the largest student employers on campus and we are always happy to meet students who hope to join our student assistant team in areas including public services, technical services, digital collections, and special collections and university archives (when your library is open as many hours each week as ours is, there is always an opportunity for a student wishing to hone skills, whether those are research skills, customer services skills, marketing skills, or project planning skills)

And, of course, we are always happy to introduce new students to their library, direct them to our public services desk to ask research questions or check out a book, and direct them to the liaison librarian for their major who will be here to help them throughout their academic journey at SDSU. And remember, while the tent comes down on the 28th, we are always here to answer your questions and to put you in contact with the resources you need to succeed as a student, staff member, or faculty member at SDSU – follow the links on our website to find your liaison librarian, answer a frequently asked question, or ask-a-librarian!
